More Questions? (FAQ)

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What could you use a c D–Light™ for?

The potential uses for this light are limited only by your imagination. How wild can you think? Take one skydiving. Wear one in a special designer rave top. Fashionistas pls note these will be available soon for the autumn/winter season. Go for a hike or bushwalk or bird–spotting. “Birds” love’em. Position prominently on the desk at work — family photos or slogans with ulterior motives such as “raise please” work well here. Use them on the bike as special safety reflectors. Enjoy hot new personalised lighting and messages in the car. Mood lighting for when you’re getting romantic? What about a night–light for the littlies? Or as the cheapest brightest personal advertising signage you’ll ever get for your shop or business. Choices, choices, choices. We’re looking forward to hearing what you have in mind.

What are Moods Inscapes™?

Moods Inscapes™ are “the stuff” that focuses your light and gets your message out there. They’re sort of like the screen on a TV, the picture in a frame, the page of a book. It’s what your photo, picture, slogan, text etc is engraved into, printed onto or cut out of. Currently available in three different moods — Glow Art™ , Bright Light Messaging (BLM™) and Messages on the Move (MOM™) , they’re what makes your c D–Light™ especially unique.

OK, so tell me about the difference between Glow Art™, Bright Light Messaging (BLM™) and Messages on the Move (MOM™)?

Glow Art™ Inscapes are made of high quality transparent acrylic. Where the acrylic has been cut, you get a brilliant glow from your LED lights.  Max Cut = Max Glow BLM™ Inscapes are opaque and come in a range of colours, textures and materials. Each BLM™ is like a stencil , and has holes or lines cut into it, to allow the light to get through. And for all those colour freaks out there, M O M consist of high grade Transparency with a C O L O U R image printed on them, just like a photo or slide is captured on a negative.

What are the Foundation Essentials?

Think of a picture. It has a background doesn’t it? And usually there’s a frame surrounding it. Your c D–Light™s are no different. The Foundation Essentials provide you with quality background and framing options. Simple to use and so effective, simply swap them over to alter the look of your message.

How do the different parts of a c D–Light™ fit together?

Step by Step Guide — How to assemble your c D–Light™

  1. Start off with a c D–Light™ unit in your choice of LED colour.
  2. Choose a setting as the background for your image, open your c D–Light™ up, and pop the Foundation Essential into the square space between the LED lamps.
  3. Now comes the hard part — deciding which Moods Inscape you wish to use — Glow Art™, BLM™ or MOM™.
  4. If it’s Glow Art™, place your choice of frame over the Inscape, and then slide them into the lid of the case together.
  5. If it’s Bright Light Messaging, place the BLM™ over the Diffuser Inscape, and then slide them into the lid of the case together.
  6. If it’s a Message on the Move, place the MOM™ over the Diffuser Inscape, cover with a frame and then slide them into the lid of the case together.
  7. Close the lid of the CD Case. Done.

Plug and play. Enjoy.

How can I customise my c D–Light™?

The most obvious way to customise your c D–Light™ is to choose several different Moods Inscapes™ or Foundation Essentials. Whenever you feel like a change, simply swap them over. Got a particular design in mind for your insert but it’s not on our website? Simply submit the photo, picture, sketch, slogan, artwork, text or idea or whatever to us, either by e–mail or regular mail, and we’ll get back to you. You can also ask for custom lengths of power cord, custom numbers of connectors (say for three lights in a row), choose different mod kits or even by asking us to make a c D–Light™ with LEDs in special spots. Think it, dream it, we’ll do our best to fulfil your wildest imaginings…

Can I change the colour of my LED lights too?

Yes — but only by buying another c D–Light™. The choice of LEDs is one feature that isn’t removable and replaceable. And as the LEDs are committed in colour, filtering doesn’t have a great effect. You can however change the appearance of your c D–Light™’s illumination by choosing different accessories. Try, for example, brightly coloured MOM™ Moods Inscapes™, different luminous backgrounds/settings and various shades of frames from the Foundation Essentials. Or investigate some of our soon to be released kits, currently under design and testing as at January 2005 — check back shortly.

SMS?

Definitely.  SMS stands for Small Message Screen. That’s what you get when you use your Moods Inscapes™ in Art Of Message™ cases without the c D–Light™ LED lamp attached. Still want it to glow? Then invest in the Glow–in–the–Dark or Reflective series Foundation Essentials. All the fun at a fraction of the price. Which leaves more dosh to expand your collection. Yeah, I know, what a headache — more choices! A good headache  Smiley-Copyright_EOTR  Because, if you want to use your Moods Inscapes™ with a c D–Light™ at another time, you can. They fit perfectly. Check it out.

How long does it last?

Based on Osram’s™ manufacturer specs for their LEDs, you can expect an average life of up to 100,000 hours (that’s more than ten years of continuous running) per Light Emitting Diode. This varies with running temperature and current. Your c D–Light™ has been designed to maximise the life of your LEDs, so that you can enjoy a Light for Life™ for between ten to thirty years or longer, depending on usage…Truly a Light for Life!

So why are there spare LEDs in my c D–Light™ unit, if LEDs are meant to last so long?

EOTR™ believes in providing superior service to our customers. Although we stand by Osram™ as a benchmark provider of quality lighting components, we understand that even with the most stringent quality control processes in manufacturing, sometimes one slips through that may not be quite what is expected. To allow for this circumstance, we have taken the liberty of providing for the unexpected, so that you experience the minimal disruption to your lighting experience. Simply take the unit and spare LEDs to any electronic repair shop or technician and it’ll be done on the spot…

Just how cheap is it to run?

Paying as little as a tiny $4.50 AUD per annum (at current prices of electricity in Australia) means you can leave your c D–Light™ on for a whole year — never turn it off — and it’ll cost you less than one burger meal at the local take–away shop. How’s that for economical! And you can feel good about it because the energy saving is good for the environment as well as your waistline.

What’s the difference between the Umbilical Cord, Elektr*Light™ battery pack and Elektr»Light™ transformer power sources then?

The same differences as between your car battery, portable batteries and home power points. You won’t get terribly far if your car plugs into a power point, and you wouldn’t use AA batteries to power your electric blanket would you? What about lugging around a movie camera with a car battery attached for those memorable wedding moments? Get real! Your c D–Light™ needs options too. So if you’re in the car, use the Umbilical Cord which plugs into the car cigarette lighter. For those times when you’re near a power point, take advantage of the Elektr»Light™ transformer. And for when it absolutely, definitely has to be portable, use the Elektr*Light™ battery pack. Choices for choices.

Why is the battery pack separate from the c D–Light™?

In this modern day and age everything’s going portable. Palm Pilots, mobile phones, laptops, portable security systems…So why not your lights? Being limited to fixed lighting technology is soooo old hat. Elektr*Light™ allows you to get with the times, take your lights with you and customise them on a day–to–day or hour–to–hour basis. Definitely better than a candle at a rock concert. And because you sometimes need longer periods of light, like at a rave when 3+ hours just isn’t enough, the fact that the Elektr*Light™ battery pack is separate from your c D–Light™ means that you can simply swap over the dead battery pack with a charged one and keep on keeping on and on and on…

What makes the Elektr*Light™ battery pack special?

Lots. Apart from the fact that it’s a convenient custom sized battery pack, designed to fit in any standard CD case, matches perfectly with your c D–Light™, and lasts for hours before it needs charging, there are some other very exciting technical considerations that make your Elektr*Light™ battery pack special. Clever electronic circuitry that protects your Elektr*Light™ from overcharging, short circuiting, from fire, etc but that allows it to be charged almost anywhere. Rechargeable nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries like those in mobile phones, that have very low internal resistances which makes them highly efficient, and able to deliver very high power and very high currents. So power lasts longer. Also economical to recharge @ less than 1c per recharge, which is incredibly neat on the wallet. You recover your investment after as little as 15 recharges, whilst the battery pack remains viable for hundreds of recharges. That’s good for the environment too! Energy saving, they don’t contain toxic cadmium (Cd) like other primary cells, and save earth’s precious resources because they don’t need to be constantly replaced. Is that special enough? We think so.

Can I connect more lamps to the battery pack?

Yes that’s totally possible. In fact you can run up to four lamps. Just visit the Art of Personal Service page to ask us about this customisable modular kit.

Is it legal to use in a car?

In Victoria, Australia, the following rules apply — see exerpts below. However please personally check with local authorities, if you are at all in doubt…

Excerpt from “Vehicle Standards Info. No 10” as found on  www.vicroads.vic.gov.au

  1. Purpose: These lamps are used to illuminate the interior of the vehicle for the convenience of the driver and passengers.
  2. Presence Optional: As many as required to illuminate the interior of any vehicle, complying with ADR 45/…
  3. Position: Such as required to illuminate the interior of the vehicle but not projecting any light other than that necessary for the purpose.
  4. Lighting Requirements: These lamps may be any colour.

Also, from the same “Vehicle Standards Info. No 10” as found on  www.vicroads.vic.gov.au

6.10 Red and White Light Visibility Zones

  1. No red light shall be visible to the front and no white light shall be visible to the rear, within the zones specified below.…This requirement does not apply to internal lamps and reversing lamps.
  2. Where Internal Lamp is defined as …a lamp(s) to illuminate the interior of the vehicle for the convenience of the driver and passengers.

Furthermore, this is an after–market accessory, like a Games machine, DVD player or car stereo system, not a fixed modification to the car. As such, it is not regulated by any more stringent regulations than a flashing TV Screen, games console, car stereo etc etc would be. Where these are not prohibited under local rules, the c D–Light™ should not be either. Generally there is/should not be any objection for stationary or parked vehicles. However, if in doubt, please check with local authorities personally.

What makes the c D–Light™ a safety feature for you?

Visibility is important. That’s why we’re warned about wearing dark colours when crossing streets or riding bicycles. Why do we have reflectors on vehicles such as cars, trucks and trailers? So that people can see them coming. Similarly, if you’re seen, there’s less chance that you’ll be the victim of an unfortunate accident. That’s what we believe too. That’s why our lights have a special range of reflective Foundation Essentials, so that you’ll definitely be seen, whether your c D–Light™ is switched on or not, as well as for SMS Art Of Messages. Be Seen! Be Safe!

Why a CD case?

Have you ever bought a fantastic, whiz–bang, gizmo that is exactly what you wanted, enjoyed it for days, months or even years, until one day — oops? And you can’t find the replacement parts. We decided to find a case that can be bought just about anywhere, as the most fragile part of your c D–Light™ is the front lid. As you can guess, CD’s are not about to go out of fashion — so the cases will conveniently be around for a long, long time. Which also means you can freshen it up at any time. Besides, there’s nothing more hip than the slimmest, coolest, most portable, customisable light and your own message in a handy CD pack…

Why a non–standard power connector?

Easily extendable, high quality leads with reliable gold–plated connections, that allow for future modular options such as remote dimming, remote flashing, remote on–off etc to give you maximum choice and performance.

What can go wrong?

Having thoroughly studied what goes wrong with other goods in the marketplace and industrial and telecommunications industries, our professional design engineers were optimally placed to understand how to avoid problems. Generally speaking, failures in electric and electronic goods usually arise from inferior components and materials, faulty connectors and problems with connections, poor contacts in switches, problematic solder joints and substandard or cheap manufacturing. In the creation and design of your c D–Light™ all points of failure have been addressed. Reliability is created by the superior materials, components and manufacturing methods. An excellent product, which you can rely on for many enjoyable years to come, with fond memories of good times.
